 (minimum 2½ years, 126 credits)

Admission Requirements

 

  • A matriculation certificate (with matric exemption) or equivalent.  - OR

  • Grade 12 pass with conditional exemption on the grounds of mature age (22 years old). - OR

  • 40 Years of age without any school qualifications.

Target Groups

The purpose of the Certificate in Community Counselling is to provide a part-time programme for those who wish to train as lay counsellors, to work alongside leaders of the local church and to work in the community in effective caring strategies. It is aimed particularly at the mature student who is already working in the church and community (some as volunteers), but needs equipping in counselling skills. Entrance requirements are as for an undergraduate degree (matriculation exemption), thus modules can be credited towards our BTh.

Programme Specified Outcomes

Certificate in Community Counselling students who have completed the qualification must be able to:

  • Know the historical development and current status of psychology in understanding human behaviour.

  • Be familiar with marriage development and family issues as part of a developmental psychology framework.

  • Be familiar with dynamics of crisis and crisis intervention strategies in order to provide effective crisis counselling.

  • Be able to counsel young people in context of certain South African realities i.e. alcohol; teenage pregnancy; AIDS; violence; malnutrition, drug abuse, gangsterism.

  • Address contemporary contextual social problems and intervention strategies e.g. HIV/AIDS.

  • Describe the psychophysical systems of personality and have an understanding of personality disorders, causes and effects.

  • Work in the community as mental health practitioners and carers.
